Supported community living: staffed group homes in the Cedar Rapids area

Supported community living (SCL) is Iowa's HCBS Intellectual Disability Waiver service that provides a place to live with the daily support a person needs — help with personal care, meals, medications, and community life, delivered by trained staff in a real home in a real neighborhood. LaBase Living operates staffed group homes across Cedar Rapids and Marion, with staffing shaped by each person's support plan.

Life in a LaBase home

Three to four housemates share each home, and everyone has their own private bedroom. Meals are shared, and residents help plan and cook them. House meetings are where residents choose menus and activities. A home supervisor knows every resident by name, and an agency activities calendar keeps community outings on the schedule.

The support behind the scenes

  • Staffing levels set by each person's support plan and service authorization
  • All direct support professionals pass Iowa criminal history and abuse-registry checks and complete required training, as Iowa law requires

Supported community living

SCL and group home questions

SCL is an Iowa Medicaid HCBS Intellectual Disability Waiver service providing housing with daily support in small staffed homes. It's the Iowa term for what many families call a group home.

Staffing levels are set by each person's support plan and service authorization. Ask us about staffing for a specific home when you inquire.

Yes — a pre-placement visit is a required part of our admission process.

The Iowa HCBS ID Waiver funds SCL services through the person's managed care organization. Room and board is typically paid from the person's own income, such as SSI — we help families understand the split.

Small homes in quiet Cedar Rapids and Marion neighborhoods — three to four housemates, a private bedroom for everyone, shared meals residents help plan and cook, and a home supervisor who knows each person by name.
