What is a mental health diagnosis?
A mental health diagnosis is a clinician's name for a pattern of thoughts, moods, or behaviors that has lasted long enough — and affected daily life enough — to need treatment and support. It describes what a person is living with. It does not describe who they are.

The short answer
A licensed clinician gives a mental health diagnosis after listening to a person’s history and looking at how symptoms show up over time. Common examples include depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and schizophrenia. The diagnosis is a starting point for treatment and support — not a ceiling on someone’s life.
Why this matters at LaBase Living
This is our specialty. The large majority of the people we support live with at least one mental health diagnosis, and our services are designed around that reality first: steady routines, familiar direct support professionals, medication support, coping strategies that the person chooses, and calm responses when a hard day arrives.
What support actually looks like
- A predictable daily rhythm — sleep, meals, work, and rest that hold steady.
- Medication routines and appointment coordination, with as much independence as possible.
- Early-warning signs written down by the person, so staff know what helps before a crisis.
- Community life kept intact — a job, a class, a church, a gym, a friendship.
What a diagnosis is not
It is not a prediction, and it is not a personality. Two people with the same diagnosis can need entirely different support, and the same person needs different support in different seasons. That is why plans are written around goals and choices, and revisited as life changes.
Iowa services that apply
Adults in Eastern Iowa with a mental health diagnosis, an intellectual disability, or both are commonly served through Iowa Medicaid HCBS programs. Depending on need, that can mean a staffed supported community living home or a family-style host home. LaBase Living provides both, and we will tell you plainly whether we are the right fit.
